Leah, you’ve had an incredible career in front of and now behind the camera. How do you balance acting and producing, and what draws you to each role? I see myself as being in service to story telling itself. I’ll take what ever roll or task given to me to contribute towards telling a story I can get behind. It’s a really important part of the human experience isn’t it?
Your return to the scenes has generated a lot of buzz, from fashion week, to attending big events for big fashion brands like max Mara, and now stepping into the fashion editorials. Can you share what inspired you to take on this new chapter of your life and Career and what it means to you personally? It’s funny I’ve always so appreciated fashion, but only recently did I have the full realization of how integral fashion is as the key to expression of “self ” within a society. Which is art. And in the clothes we use to express ourselves every day, however seemingly mundane, we are all artists. Ever since that epiphany I’ve been completely fascinated by fashion.
You’ve been a part of some iconic television and film projects. How have those experiences shaped your approach to storytelling? I’m deeply humbled by the fandom of the projects I’ve been part of. The people who allow certain shows and films to become part of them in such a way. They’re all very important to me. While before storytelling may have been more about me wanting to be understood, now I keep the keen awareness of how important stories are to others. This is very close to my heart when taking on new projects.
As a producer, you’re now in a position to create opportunities for others. How do you approach inclusivity and representation in the projects you choose? Inclusivity and representation really is the thing isn’t it? I mean, Shakespeare sold tickets for a penny. Isn’t the point to get as many people as you can to come together and feel Actress & Producer something collectively? I realize I’m no Shakespeare.
None of us are. Well, maybe Ephorn. Or Speilberg. I think film, at its best, has an opportunity to speak to an experience that brings people together… in being both universally true, while also connecting to something that is deeply personal.
Fashion plays a significant role in your public image. How does your personal style influence your choices on set and for the red carpet? Play is the thing! I am given an opportunity to express myself daily (as we all are) in my choice of clothing. It’s a liberating part of life! I so appreciate every artist who has made it their focus to contribute to our daily expression.
What role do beauty and self-care play in your life, especially with such a demanding schedule? With this photo shoot, the photographer and I (my ride or die, near and dear friend Rocky) wanted to honor a vital part of our self care. Whichis Girl Rot. Sometimes you have to let yourself languish in your own complexities and let it get weird. For me this means pizza, wine, and The Real Housewives of You Name It. But we all have our own versions of this. Rocky and I kept coming across these Victorian era paintings of girls doing the same thing through out the ages but in their own way during their own time. And we wanted to honor them. Self care is about giving yourself what you need. And sometimes that’s letting yourself Girl Rot without shame.
You’ve been very open about using your platform to advocate for important causes. What issues are particularly close to your heart right now? I would love to contribute very importantly to all of the causes. But for now, to anyone who might feel a little lonely in themselves right now… I love you. And you’re awesome.
What advice would you give to aspiring actors and producers trying to break into the industry? Find a calling bigger than yourself to fight for. Looking back on your journey, what has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far? There hasn’t been a singular moment. But all the moments that felt like I did what I set out to do. What’s next for you? Can we expect any surprises in the near future? I sure hope so!
