There are no actors in your family. But your parents instilled in you a love of art and beauty. Tell me, did you dream of becoming an actress and TV presenter as a child?
Thats right. Pure engineers and teachers is what I have in my family. My mom was a history teacher and always had a passion for writing theater pieces. I believe that in heart and soul she’s an artist too. As a kid I was always very extroverted, putting together monologues and shows for my friends and family. I didn’t really said as a child I wanted to be on tv… but unconsciously I was working my way. Usually playing with my moms dresses and shoes, imitating telenovela actors, writing poems, etc.
How did cinema and acting come into your life? Was it easy or was a difficult path?
After finishing high school I went to medical school for almost two years. Parallel I was working as a model and reporting for a late night show. After having some experience in tv I discovered my truth vocationchanging career direction to communications and journalism. Later on when I finished my degree a good friend invited me to apply to an acting school in Miami. Immediately began working with small roles in telenovelas for Telemundo. With that- other opportunities came along like my first leading role in the horror film “The Devil’s Hole”. I should say that it has been a very difficult path. But the best things in life are often the ones hardest to get.
What attracted you to the profession of an actress?
As an actor I have the opportunity to live different “lives”. To play with actions and intentions that I won’t or can’t in real live. It’s such a beautiful career, one that I can connect and play deeply with my emotions. But the most beautiful thing is that I have the opportunity to give the spectator a chance to disconnect, relax and submerge him/her into an imaginary world.
How did you get your first role?
I auditioned for a guest star role in the telenovela “Mas Sabe el Diablo” for Telemundo. Days after- my agent called that I got the part. This show was a very popular one, so I was really excited.
I know that you love going to the movies. Do you watch films as a spectator or as an actress? Do you analyze the work of your colleagues?
Difficult! Both. I want to be the spectator, maybe at the beginning I do but unconsciously I start looking into technical details…
Do you like to watch films with your participation? Why do you criticize yourself and why do you praise yourself?
Most of the time I do watch myself at the premieres and that’s it! Cause yes.. I’m very critical and would say things like… why I didn’t do it this or that way?
What role played by you left an imprint in your soul or maybe changed your views on something in life?
Working alongside John Travolta in “The Fanatic” changed my game into realizing that dreams do come true.
The movie «The Fanatic» was released in 2019. You received positive reviews for your role in the publications of The Washington Post and other equally well-known publications. Is that high praise for you?
I’m truly honored and grateful on how people and film critics judged my work on that film.
Whose opinion about the role played by you is most important to you? Who is your main critic?
I appreciate the opinion of the general public for sure. My mom is very critic with me.
What role would you play?
An iconic women from history for sure. Or one that requires me to change my appearance drastically.
You were born in Bonao, Dominican Republic. Tell me about your homeland. Why do you love her?
Bonao is a gem in the middle of my country. A flat valley surrounded by mountains, with very cold rivers and candid people. Whats not to love! Is where I made my true friends. Those kids I met in kindergarten, became my friends for life. More than 34 years of friendship.
Why is it important for you to do charity work?
There are a lot of kids out there in need of love. Lately I go with a group of other actors, including producer and actress Kiki Melendez to “Orfanato Niños y Niñas de Cristo” an orphanage in La Romana, we give them the opportunity to sumerge into acting. They have no clue-but with acting they work internally their situations just thinking they are “having fun”.
«After the pandemic I realized that life is very fragile and all we have is now. Nothing is forever»
Tell me, what are you like in everyday life? What do you like to do, how do you spend your time? Do you often get to spend time with your family?
Meditate is #1. I get up and make my green juice, then go down to the gym or walk for an hour. Work on my auditions or callbacks is what I do on my daily basis when im not filming. When I have free time I travel back to Dominican Republic to spend time with my family and enjoy that great food that I miss so much.
What is the meaning of your life? How do you define priorities for yourself — career, family, personal life, motherhood?
For years I’ve been a workaholic or let’s call it: “actressholic” and that has been my priority. But lately-being away I understood that family comes first. The well-being of my parents #1. After the pandemic I realized that life is very fragile and all we have is now. Nothing is forever. We just have one life. I want to spend more time with my family. And now that i’m expecting my first child for sure priorities will change.
